Added August 13, 2010:A Little of Saddle Ridge HistoryBy Greg Steiner, Past President Saddle Ridge CA.From an article in the Saddle Ridge News of 2002 The Saddle Ridge Community Association was born in 1968. There were no more than 30-40 acreages that formed the area bounded by McKnight Blvd, the present Barlow Trail, Country Hills Blvd, and 68th Street NE. Most of the original acreages were located on the west side of 36th street between 80th Ave. and McKnight Blvd. As one drives north above McKnight Blvd., the area along the east side of 36th street forms a definite ridge of prominence. This ridge offers a spectacular view of Nose Hill and the mountains to the west, and often one would see owners on their horses enjoying a ride on this ridge. A large percentage of the owners had a farm animal or two that offered a great deal of enjoyment, and at the same time, with pasture grazing, helped to keep fire hazards as low as possible. With this scenic landscape and the love of horses, it was Rene Desreux who suggest the name Saddle Ridge be used to designate the new community. From what I understand there was a contest, and Rene’s suggestion for the new communities name was chosen. It should be noted that there were no other communities in the area, as Castleridge, Falconridge, Taradale and Martindale were still occupied by homesteaders. In the early 70’s the City of Calgary used the name to draw up the area structure plan which has become known as the Saddle Ridge ASP. Note: The Community Hall was built in 1971 a Quonset with a dirt floor, the hardwood dance floor was added later. The grounds also held rodeos, baseball, and an ice arena.
- Committee News: We are always looking for volunteers to assist us with the many functions/issues we look after. Please contact any member of the executive if you can offer your time, even if it's only a one time thing!
- Have you wondered why you see the same names over & over in our newsletters? We have a core group of a dozen or so volunteers that wear many hats!! By getting involved you can help make your community a better place to live & raise a family!
- Other contacts in our newsletter.
